Inside FDA's food failure >>> My investigation into why FDA doesn't come anywhere near American consumers' expectations on food safety and nutrition. Been working on this for months (or really, a decade?) Pour yourself a cup of coffee and read it here: politico.com/interactives/20…

In non-Covid news (yes, there's some), @Oracle buying @Cerner is fascinating. cnbc.com/2021/12/20/oracle-t… EHR biz is no great shakes, yet millions of patients' health data is priceless. The deal is Act 1 in a play by digital giants to buy these data – let the ethics questions begin!

Fabulous trial reduced loneliness, depression, and anxiety in Meals on Wheels participants who live alone over four weeks. How? College volunteers w 2 hrs training simply called a roster of 6-9 folks 2-5X/week (elders' choice) to ask how they are. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Worth the read as you make decisions on protocols for seeing family & friends in a "bubble", sending kids back to school, heading back to work etc.
“False sense of security”—high tech gathering of 49 tech thinkers was held in 4 day “bubble” without mask mandate after arrival daily testing. Result? ~43% (21 of 49) of tech attendees got #COVID19 soon after, including organizer @PeterDiamandis. 0% of masked support staff. 🧵

After years of being stymied by well-funded interests, Congress has agreed to ban one of the most costly and exasperating practices in medicine: surprise medical bills. nytimes.com/2020/12/20/upsho…

Excellent (and heartbreaking) thread to understand the nuances of data we're seeing.
There is something funny happening with COVID hospitalizations Proportion of COVID pts getting hospitalized falling A lot Just recently My theory? As hospitals fill up, bar for admission rising A patient who might have been admitted 4 weeks ago may get sent home now Thread

Especially since there aren't any available hospital beds...
This is a very big deal -- enabling reimbursement for acute hospital care at home. And I'm proud of the @AriadneLabs team led by David Levine that helped make it possible.

Better public health campaigns and smarter, kinder messaging to kids is important, but we also need to demand better from companies producing (and aggressively marketing) the sugary, processed foods in the first place.
#Calories in - calories out = #FatShaming. But calories are the wrong metric. Insulin is the right metric. It's about #MetabolicHealth. It's about #UltraprocessedFood. 88% of America is metabolically ill. The way to stop fat shaming is to kill the calorie. nytimes.com/2020/11/13/opini…

Here's a scientist who believed that time-restricted eating (eating in an 8-hour window each day) was helpful for weight loss. He did a trial, and TRE wasn't any better than the control group. He is shouting from the rooftops that his theory was wrong. Science in action.

A must-read thread to understand the implications of ending the ACA, especially during the pandemic.
TODAY: Trump is doing something about the pandemic. Today he’s filing a brief in the Supreme Court to end the ACA & take health care coverage away from 20 million people.

1/ As a state leader, you cannot hide from the virus. What you can do is mandate masks, ramp up your testing, require symptomatic folks to isolate, and restrict large gatherings. It has been 3 months since we launched covidexitstrategy.org and here's what we're seeing.

This is beautiful. Plus: Honorable. Intelligent. Dependable.
An estimated 51,000 fathers have died of COVID in the US. I invited people today who have lost their dad (not just from COVID) to text me a picture & their 3 favorite words to describe him to 952-234-6315. Feel free to send.

Thinking about the thing. Talking about the thing. Being inspired about the thing. Sharing about the thing. None of that is the same as DOING THE THING or BEING THE THING. I know this. You know this. Let's keep reminding ourselves real value requires stepping in the arena.

Seems short-sighted to focus on only deaths as the measure of severity of COVID-19. As the virus is causing permanent heart, lung, and liver damage, I imagine we'll see insurers classifying it as a preexisting condition, adding further economic hardship on top of health hardship.
