I want us to acknowledge this cycle of trauma we are all going through every time there's layoffs in our industry.

Well, looks like my time with NPR is up. Gutted that @NPRinvisibilia the show I love & have given 7 yrs of my life to has "stopped production". Gutted to not get to work with my brilliant teammates. Gutted that me & some 100 colleagues I admire have lost our jobs. This sucks.

NO ONE in podcasting was doing the kind of journalism that @LouderThanARiot mastered. It is a singular show about music, culture, and justice. Their latest season - about misogynoir and marginalization in hip-hop - is already a triumph. Read about this team (@Sid_Madden's thread below) and respect their work by listening & supporting.

fr yall need to know how Realer Than Real this team is: @manosundaresan, who produced today's ep on the legendary MC Sha-Rock, is one of the best writers I know. Incisive storyteller, literally the future of culture-shaping music jrnlism npr.org/2023/03/21/116498675…

With all due respect, the second thing I want to say is that is that cancelling shows like @LouderThanARiot is the exact opposite of what @NPR needs to be doing if it wants to stay relevant. The show is one of several pointing the way forward about what journalism can be.

One of the worst things about these layoffs is seeing a familiar pattern of "wanting to speak to a younger, more diverse audience" while shifting resources away from work that does exactly that.
Replying to @LouderThanARiot
The hardest part is that our szn is about misogynoir queer, trans, Black women face in hip-hop. Yet w/in NPR, the majority impacted in these layoffs were queer, poc staff & programs. NPR has claimed qtpoc ppl are the same ppl they are trying to reach with their "North Star". 3/4

Hurting and heartbroken for the incredibly talented folks that NPR is letting go of this week. If any NPR folks want to talk freelance story editing or just the indie landscape in general please don't hesitate to reach out, I'd love to offer help and encouragement.

In ep3 of Imperfect Paradise: The Forgotten Revolutionary @AGuzmanLopez tells a story (with help from @natchudnovsky, @tabasfat and @francisco_apino) of pain and love so poignant you can't not be moved. I promise you have never heard a reporter on a journey like this.

I’ve had the honor of sitting in on some group edits for this one & we are so lucky to receive this gift - The Forgotten Revolutionary is out today! Congrats @AGuzmanLopez @francisco_apino @natchudnovsky @tabasfat @audreyqq @antoniacere !!
It's out! This is a love letter to student activists. A reflection on how Latinx identity has shifted since the 90s. A mystery but also a moving memoir of @AGuzmanLopez's own story. And most importantly - a tribute to Oscar Gomez whose life and legacy deserves to be remembered.

NEW PODCAST ALERT! Imperfect Paradise: The Forgotten Revolutionary is a memoir, a Chicano history primer, & death investigation all in one. I can't tell you how many times I cried editing this series, it's just so well-written and the tape is sooo good. 1/ podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

It's one of the most ambitious projects I've worked on. The first two episodes are out today, and the remaining six will come out weekly. So, so proud of this crew and the story they're telling. 3/

On Monday a show that @AGuzmanLopez - Latinx pubic radio royalty - has been sitting on for essentially three decades will finally be out! It’s a true crime show set in the Chicano student movement of the 90s. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…
