It all comes down to identity.
This AI technology is Pandora's box. Quite soon, the internet will be saturated with illusion. Perfect AI speech, audio, and video synthesis will drown out reality. AI bots will flood social media. No one will be able to tell the difference between interacting with an AI machine or a real human online. Even telephone calls will become totally untrustworthy.
Predictably, government will seize upon the opportunity created by this dialectic chaos and attempt to impose its own centralized solution on the public: mandatory digital identity verification for everyone, at all times.
It’s about total information control.
For too long the Internet has acted as a double-edged sword. Its potential for anonymous user activity allows anyone at all to spread any thoughts, ideas, or information patterns that they please, with impunity. State secrets, “dangerous” ideas, “ludicrous” conspiracy theories. Misinformation and disinformation. Until now there has been no easy solution to these perceived problems. A federal, centralized, digital identity platform threatens to finally put an end to anonymity online, allowing the state to trace misinformation and other “dangerous” communications to their source.
The risk of abuse produced by the state’s monopolization of surveillance technologies in turn necessitates voluntary, open source, and decentralized alternatives that can verify user’s identity and credentials without compromising the individual’s basic right to privacy; the freedom to choose what you share with others.
