This administration recognizes the fundamental right to information as a cornerstone of public trust and democratic governance. This is a significant step toward advancing transparency, strengthening public access to information, and increasing accountability. Today, for the first time since the RTI Act was enacted in 2014, the President’s Office and all ministries have proactively disclosed the information required under the Act. This is a major step for transparency. Two previous administrations failed to fully comply with this legal obligation. President Dr @MMuizzu’s administration has now delivered what should have been done years ago.

Fitch’s upgrade should be seen beyond politics. For Maldives, a better credit rating means stronger credibility when negotiating with lenders, investors and development partners. It can improve access to financing, reduce risk premiums, and give the country more room to manage future debt responsibly. This is why the successful repayment of the USD 500 million Sukuk mattered. It was not just one payment. It changed how markets and institutions assess Maldives’ near term risk. At a time of global uncertainty, Maldives is now better positioned than it was a few months ago.

As I have stated previously, the USD 300 million Sukuk proposed by the Bank of Maldives and guaranteed by the Government of Maldives is neither intended for budget support nor for the cash flow requirements of the Government. This is a jointly planned initiative of the Government of Maldives and the Bank of Maldives, designed to stimulate tourism-led economic growth, particularly in the northern and southern regions of the country. It is expected to contribute to the expansion of the Government’s revenue base and support the achievement of macro-fiscal targets in the years ahead. His Excellency President Dr @MMuizzu’s policy is clear: to strengthen fiscal stability and debt sustainability over the medium term through private sector-driven investment and the creation of well-paid jobs. The upgrade of the Maldives’ sovereign credit rating by Fitch demonstrates that the Government’s planned fiscal reforms and economic measures are gaining credibility and international recognition.

.@FitchRatings has upgraded the Maldives’ credit rating, reflecting improved economic conditions following the successful repayment of the USD 500 million Sukuk in April. I extend my congratulations and gratitude to His Excellency President Dr @MMuizzu for the leadership and guidance under which we have implemented vital fiscal reforms. President @MMuizzu and his team deserve due credit for settling the USD 500 million sukuk and the USD 50 million payment to India. Given the pressure on reserves and external financing, this was not an ordinary achievement. Some may downplay it by saying Maldives has never defaulted before, true but Maldives has also never had to settle such a large amount in such a short period under this level of pressure. A default would have damaged confidence, pushed up borrowing costs, worsened the dollar situation, affected imports, and increased pressure on prices, businesses, jobs and ordinary households. We have seen how other countries struggled in similar situations. Maldives managed to avoid a financial crisis and preserve stability. For an import dependent country, that matters.

It was a real pleasure arriving in Kinbidhoo and receiving such a warm welcome from the local community.
