Why didn't Shanks use Haki when his arm was bitten by the Lord of the coast? I believe this chapter finally solves this mistery and the solution is the markings of the God's knights. We can clearly see the marking/tattoo on Saint Sommers left arm! #ONEPIECE1140

We also know now, Shanks returned to the holy land for a while, probably becoming a GK aswell receiving the marking. But he left and when he saw Luffy he knew he is the one. To truly come to an end with his past as a GK he let his arm be bitten of, so he can't be summoned anymore
