So if your argument is, “people in your tradition committed atrocities, therefore your tradition is false,” then congratulations: you just sawed off the branch you’re sitting on. Catholics don’t defend every evil act done by Catholics in history. We condemn sin where it happened. But don’t act like your side floated above history in spotless white robes. Human beings are sinful. That’s not a refutation of the Church. That’s one of the reasons Christ founded one.

Obviously there will be people who identify more with one or the other but to put an example to this, I remember the debate between Dinesh D’Souza & Bill Ayers some years back. I personally identified more with D’Souza ideologically, but I say he got his ass handed to him by Ayers because Ayers kept his points analytical, attacking ideas, while D’Souza made it personal. The trouble is precisely that what drives Trump’s recent grandiose actions is the desperate wish to be a “Great Man of History,” and what drives his most devoted followers is a desperate wish to believe that that is what he is. There is no other explanation for the breathtaking irrationality of his actions and theirs – of the bizarre obsession with bullying Greenland and Canada into annexation; of the mad scheme to take ownership of the intractable Israel-Palestine conflict and forcibly relocate millions of Gazans; of the gleefully willful imposition of a half-baked draconian tariff scheme that is causing immediate and massive economic damage with no clear mechanism for achieving its purported ends; and of his most devoted followers’ unwillingness to listen to the slightest criticism of any of this, despite the blindingly obvious practical and moral problems with these actions.
