This is Richard Webb. He's my father-in-law. He served two tours in Vietnam as a Marine Recon Sniper. He received two purple hearts for his service along with countless other medals. This photo is seven years ago... Today, Richard spends most days not knowing what the hell is going on because he developed type 2 diabetes from agent orange in Vietnam. My wife has been fighting the VA for over a year to get Richard the care and benefits he needs just to survive. The process is a joke. The service is a bigger joke. The VA case managers are absolute dog shit and treat our nation's heroes like garbage. They also act as if they're doing our vets a FAVOR for the most basic of care. @SecVetAffairs, I've been to your headquarters building in DC, and have first hand experience dealing with the incompetent staff. This is hands down the most embarrassing department in all of the Trump administration. If the Boss knew how horrendously our veterans are still being treated after you've had eighteen months to fix these issues, you'd be fired tomorrow. I waited a long time to write this, but at this point I've seen enough.

One of the cruelest things about chronic illness and chronic pain is that you don’t have very much to look forward to. When your world gets small, the things that remain become enormous. A good doctor’s appointment. A day with less pain. A few nights of real sleep. A letter you’ve been waiting years to receive. A chance to reclaim a little piece of the life you lost. A friend saying, “I’m coming to see you,” because they know you can’t easily come to them. Healthy people often have a dozen things carrying them into tomorrow. We don’t always have that luxury. So we pour our hope into the few lights we can still see. Maybe that’s why those moments feel so beautiful. Maybe that’s why they can keep us alive. But it also means that when those promises are delayed or broken, it doesn’t just feel like disappointment. It feels like losing a future you’ve been holding onto with both hands. People sometimes ask why the “little things” mean so much to us. The truth is, when you’ve spent years surviving, hope is never a little thing.

Imagine if diabetics had to spend three days every month wondering whether they’d be allowed access to insulin. Imagine if heart patients had to call six pharmacies to find blood pressure medication. Imagine if cancer patients were treated like suspects for asking whether their medication was in stock. People would call it a healthcare crisis. When it happens to chronic pain patients, it’s called policy. At what point does a policy become a healthcare crisis?

Healthy people see someone cancel plans and think: they didn’t want to come. Chronically ill people cancel plans and then spend the rest of the day grieving the thing they wanted to do. We already picked out the outfit. We already imagined the drive there, the coffee, the food, the laughter, seeing everyone. Healthy people think, “There’s always next time.” Chronically ill people think, “I hope my body lets me.” People don’t realize that sometimes we don’t just miss the plans. We miss the memories we were supposed to make.

The people who abandoned you during your weakest chapter do not automatically deserve access to your strongest one if healing or remission ever finds you again. Most of us forgave people a long time ago. This isn’t about revenge. It isn’t about bitterness. And it isn’t about keeping score. It’s about recognition. Some people only loved us when we were easy. Easy to reach. Easy to entertain. Easy to accompany. Easy to consume. Illness revealed that. And if a second chance ever finds some of us again, understand this clearly: We are not spending our second chance resurrecting relationships that died during our first battle.
