Yet another thread about calling the question. I'm doing this one again because the discussion has moved off into subthreads, and this gives an opportunity to consolidate it and make it easier for everyone to see. 🧵

Maybe we could select a class of motions (amendments to governing documents?) and say that we could do the same thing, but how would we select the champions? It's easy on those appeals, because you have two distinct parties, a committee vs a church.

So, I really don't know of a better way to do it than the way that we do it.

A personal plea: Let's keep the SBC discussion going on Twitter so I can avoid looking at posts about Communist Kickball.

This is why Texas will never be defeated. "Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined."
USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving. Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free. I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these." "They just come with the table, man." They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner. This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat. I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared. "Did we…?" "Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless." Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined. My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude." Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man. I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy. Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived. I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most. Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

OK, all you RPW folks, I kinda see your point.
I convince my friend to give church one more try, and he gets greeted by a sea of puppets singing children’s songs like a cult with a craft budget.

Best sermon in that Pastors' Conference by a long shot.
OTD in 2017 Shane Hall preached on Philippians 4 at the SBC Pastors Conference while suffering from cancer. He passed away in 2018. His message that “All we need is Jesus" still continues to point people to Christ.

In defense of moving the previous question: 🧵

In summary, moving the previous question is appropriate as a time-management strategy; it is inappropriate as a people-manipulation strategy.

And the solution is simple: Let the messengers be inclined to vote against such motions unless there are good reasons to do so.
