Every training camp I had at Washington State University, Coach Leach would share the same story. The story of two kids. The rich kid and the poor kid. The rich kid has two choices. He can become spoiled, entitled, lazy, and expect everything to be handed to him because he has been given more. Or he can take every advantage of what he has been given—resources, coaching, opportunities—and use it to become even better. The poor kid has two choices too. He can say, “I never had a chance. Nobody gave me anything. The world is against me.” He can feel sorry for himself and use it as an excuse. Or he can say, “I may not have what they have, but I am going to outwork everybody.” He can become tougher, more driven, and more relentless than everybody else. It was a powerful message in a locker room full of people from different backgrounds, different families, and different life experiences. Some guys came from wealth. Some came from almost nothing. Some had every opportunity. Others had to fight for every inch. But despite all of those differences, everybody still had the same choice. You can take ownership and use what you have as fuel. Or you can become victim-minded. You can look for excuses, blame your circumstances, become entitled, and convince yourself that because of what you have—or because of what you do not have—you cannot become what you want to be. It is not about how you start. It is about what you choose to do with how you start. The rich kid can waste what he has been given or use it to build something greater. The poor kid can use his circumstances as an excuse or as fuel. In the end, greatness does not come from starting with more or less. It comes from which person inside of you that you choose to feed. If you don’t write a goal down, it’s not a goal - it’s a wish. Clarity creates accountability. Accountability drives action. Action, repeated daily, is what leads to results.

Wayne Gretzky shares the advice he gives to every young athlete. "The commitment and the work ethic is worth it." "My dad was a big believer that the harder you work as a kid, the more fun you're going to have as an adult. And the more fun you have as a kid, the harder you're going to work as an adult." Read that again. It's one of the truest things ever said about success. Work now, play later. Or play now and work forever. "The commitment and the passion for what you're doing is so worth it at the end of the day. Just believe each and every day - it's really, really worth it." Commitment is a choice. It's choosing long-term growth over short-term comfort. "I wouldn't trade my life in for anything in the world." Outcomes and rewards require sacrifice. The key question is: what price am I willing to pay? (🎥 Be Better Off Show)

When you coach a game that flows as freely as hockey, you can't control it all. Just build great drills that put the kids into little windows of time that simulate situations they will see in the game.

Client's kids are 28, 31, and 34. She's sitting on $3.2M. Wants to leave it all when she dies. I asked: "What will they need money for at 58, 61, and 64?" Their mortgages will be paid. Kids will be grown. Retirement accounts funded. Meanwhile, right now: One is drowning in student loans One can't afford a house in this market One is planning a wedding on a shoestring budget $50K today changes their lives. $50K at 60? It's a rounding error. She's giving $30K to each this year. Watching them use it. Die with your memories, not your money.

If the FCS used the inane FBS approach, Illinois State wouldn’t even have been in the playoffs. But don’t worry, they’ve got a great system over there. One that absolutely could never be improved upon by [checks notes] doing what everyone else in the sport already does.

💡 Every emotion is okay. Every behavior is not. Elite performers feel everything—frustration, disappointment, pressure. But they don’t act on impulse. They regulate. They reset. They respond with intention. Because bad body language doesn’t just show weakness… It drags the whole team down. 🧠 Emotional regulation isn’t soft. It’s the separator.
