This morning at Home Depot. Big trucks bad drivers = lines in the parking lots need to be farther apart. I am glad I came out first so I could get in from my passenger side and skillfully back out of there because they for sure would have hit my car backing out.
I’ve spent much of this year learning about car bloat, the process through which smaller vehicles are being replaced by increasingly massive SUVs and trucks. What I’ve learned: Huge cars are terrible for society, often in ways that are hidden. A summary 🧵

Why are rice cookers the only countertop appliance with a carrying handle?

Is it just me or did room temperature superconductor feel just like arsenic bacteria all over again?

I just took down my framed original pen drawing of Lady Longleaf, my longtime avatar, and found this taped to the back. Thanks, past me. I totally don’t remember putting that there.

🚄Engineers were inspired by the kingfisher's sleek form when troubleshooting a problem with Japan's bullet train design. Mimicking the kingfisher's pointed beak and aerodynamic head shape, designers cut down on their high-speed trains' excessive noise and air displacement.

In just a few months Hank Green was diagnosed and treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma and kept making videos the whole time. Meanwhile Diana Cowern has been completely incapacitated for a year with MECFS. I feel like cancer is sorted. Please work on mysterious chronic illnesses now.

Question for my sciencey friends: would you drink filtered water from a jug that previously contained muriatic acid? My brother had to put 12 gallons of acid in his pool and he likes the bottles.

I told him to fill the bottles with water and let it soak for a day, empty, repeat. After a week or so it’s probably fine. It’ll be cleaner than the drinking water machine at Publix. He’s just gotta get those labels off because stigma is not water soluble.

Here we go again, a new record anomaly for North Atlantic sea surface temperatures. Today's anomaly is a full 1.15°C above the 1982-2023 mean for the day. I thought the previous peak was high, but I may need to extend the y-axis again soon! Data: climatereanalyzer.org/clim/s…

Does anybody recognize this plant? It just appeared in the woods near my clothesline between two longleaf pines. I burned there less than a year ago. Seek can’t get past Dicots 😒

I’m working on my air moving cubicle. I had a old brass outlet cover so I used it in the only outlet that’s on the wood. I feel like that calls for a brown outlet instead of white. Right?

But if I plug in this white 24 VDC power supply for some LEDs doesn’t that just clash with the brown? Maybe I should swap the cover to white instead.

Yeah, that’s probably best. I’ll save the brass cover for something else

I hear thunder. Tornado watches again. My power was out from 9:30 to 3:30 last night. I couldn’t sleep because it was hot so I called the power company just to be sure they knew my power was out. It came back on while I was listening to options on the automated system.

Now I’m wondering what’s my better tornado shelter, my booth inside the shed with heavy longleaf posts and beams or the tiny house? I think an actual tornado could skin the shed like a banana, but it might spare the booth.

I can see the tiny house doing a Wizard of Oz though. Wet sand might not have enough friction to hold my footings in the ground. But it’s also a pretty small target and being on a hilltop is helpful. (Thanks, Bernoulli.) Anyway, I like my odds. I’m ready I guess.

I’m more excited about this new Danny Michel album drop than I am for more episodes of Yellowstone. By a lot, honestly. I find it hard to relate to those homicidal maniacs even after they got them a conservation easement. youtu.be/eGV-rpiiyTA

I’m sure Apple VR is great, but what if it was a face shield and respirator that would adapt the focal length to what I’m working on? So I don’t have to buy all different diopter safety glasses. I would buy that

Apple has new software for Apple Watch aimed at children to be sure they get enough daylight to avoid developing myopia, but Apple Watches are all huge! I can’t even wear one except when I’m asleep. Do children have bigger wrists than me now??
