I'm very proud to feature the work of me and my colleagues the past 30 years, in a permanent exhibit on modern astro instrumentation, largely regarding finding tiny things orbiting nearby stars, but also detectors and spectroscopy. Opening May 4 @AMNH

@palomarskies Scott, on the right in this picture in that bubble is your time-lapse film of us Installing Project 1640! You are credited, of course! 🙂

It is a rare moment to be with two of one's most important friends and advisors in one moment. I am forever thankful to Shri and David.

Continuing my highlights of cool currency and stamps, I got a few of these recently. Some of you might receive one on a postcard or letter soon.

I have a small, permanent exhibit about astrophysics instruments in this new building on the Columbus Avenue side of our campus. I can't post photos yet, but I am proud that we will showcase the research at one of NYC's greatest science institutions. architecturaldigest.com/stor…

Nice coin to get as change at my bodega, but can anyone tell me when the US ever used the symbol $ for currency before this round of coins? Maybe the Sacagewea ones? It makes them look cheap and similar to casino tokens. Spell out "One Dollar."

@usmint What was the first coin or bill ever minted or printed that used the symbol $?

The edge of the coin is nice, with "E Pluribus Unum," 13 stars, the year of minting, in this case 2019, and one little square.

D-78 is one of the most important infrared instruments ever used on a telescope (the Palomar 200-inch). Its history is incredible. Here it is. We are incorporating it into a new exhibit about astrophysics instrumentation in the @AMNH's new building, opening in mid-Feb.

I'm fairly certain that this is the first US Postal Service stamp to feature an astronomical observatory. I have been using this telescope for some 28 years, and I have a pile of these stamps. They are fun to stick on letters to friends. @USPS

I am immensely proud of my latest PhD student who just defended her dissertation: Dr. Rose K. Gibson. Advising graduate students to become fully independent scientists is perhaps the best part of my work. Here she is in the Palomar dome in the middle of the night.

Ok, these are really cool stamps from @USPS. They issued 30 million in September, but I only just found out. Got some at the post office. This is their official pic, with the forever crossed out. They look better in person.

This past week the International Gemini Observatory's Board of Directors met in Chile (where the Gemini South telescope is). Fantastic meeting. We got to go up the mountain, Cerro Pachon, to see it, and, as a special treat, LSST, still under construction. @GeminiObs.
