Alan Butts served over 19 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. His conviction was recently overturned and last night, he left the courthouse a free man. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to help such an amazing person regain his freedom.

USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving. Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free. I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these." "They just come with the table, man." They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner. This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat. I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared. "Did we…?" "Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless." Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined. My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude." Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man. I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy. Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived. I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most. Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

Before Game 5, a reminder that some futures announce themselves early. This is a page from a 2005 Metro Hoops camp publication featuring future Knick: 4th grader Karl Towns Jr. (and Kyle Anderson aka Slomo!). The scouting report on Towns ends with: “Remember this kid’s name.” Now, 21 years later, he’s leading the #Knicks in the NBA Finals. Basketball is wild. 🏀🗽

It's the 1993-94 season and Wake Forest has a promising young freshman named Tim Duncan. Also on that team is a back-up sophomore guard named Stacey Castle. Tim Duncan would go on to college and NBA greatness. While the NBA wasn't in Stacey Castle's future, fatherhood was. In 2004, Stacey's son Stephon Javonte Castle was born. You know the rest. #Spurs #SanAntonio #WakeForest #TimDuncan #StephCastle #StephonCastle #NBA #NBAFinals #GoSpursGo #PorVida

.@fredkatz puts a number to the pre-switching/cross-matching in Game 3: "After guarding 48 pick-and-rolls over Games 1 and 2, Wembanyama defended only 14 in Game 3, according to Second Spectrum." Out of the action, on the back line, blowing up everything. nytimes.com/athletic/7343592…

This is so cool, easy visualization tiers for a novice like me to get primed for who’s who in the World Cup
Welcome to Stars of Soccer, The Athletic’s World Cup player guide. Lionel Messi is here, and there’s room for Cristiano Ronaldo too. There are legends of the game, the current elite, rising stars and others who really make their teams tick. They are old and young, some at their first World Cup, some at their sixth. They are players you should enjoy this summer, and we are here to tell you all about them (and how to pronounce their names). 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/7279880…

What’s especially weird is we don’t play Vic the entire 1st quarter and then start the 2nd quarter with him on the bench, like OKC / NYK do w their superstar guards. We get him a breather halfway through the 1st & he usually starts the 2nd quarter. Still getting rocked there. Odd
