Weekend thought It would be fun to start a podcast that's like @AcquiredFM but for books instead of companies Cover: a writer, their work, the substance of their book how it was received, what it means today, weird lore etc. >1x per week could be a cool way to spend a year

I gave a (very) short talk last month at Dorm Summit to a bunch of college students on how they might think about their careers through the lens of reputation & personal brand If you’re interested in listening to me yap about those topics, then check out the recording below 👽

Morning advice if you want to write on the internet -Write about topics you genuinely care about... if you don’t, you won’t be able to stay interested in the work for long enough to get good -Try to write consistently, both because it’s a forcing function to press send & also because you need the reps of having a lot of work out in public to see how people respond in terms of topics, structures formats >Related: Writing is like stand up comedy where a comedian takes time to figure out what’s funny by testing their jokes on sample audiences to see if/when they laugh… I think good writers need feedback in the same way to figure out when they're at their best -Every time someone drops a comment, take the time to respond because at the beginning building an audience happens one relationship at a time… and go over the top with it: respond to their comments, go read their stuff & comment on their posts... this doesn’t scale over time, but if you’re starting out, it’s a good way to play the game >Related: being active like this is also a good way to build relationships & people who come up writing together tend to stick together, which makes this sort of life less lonely -Good luck >Also if you’re proud of one of your essays feel free to shill me, I’ll read it

My best childhood friend went viral last week for this set of (very cool) claude skills & if you like gaming or 3D stuff you should check it out >We wanted to be "video game testers" for our careers circa age 12 & Neilson basically fulfilled the dream so gg

It’s wild because early this year, I asked Ben his thoughts regarding personal branding. He sent me a voice message with over 5 MINUTES worth of feedback. Ben is one of the people I value as “high-signal.” He just gets it. Watch his video. Like it. Bookmark it. And follow him.

@zackrosenblatt_ the @Dorm_DAO team did a great job with the event so give them a follow (especially if you're still in college)

it's almost impressive how cringe most posts on this app feel after you spend some time afk... it's such a weird bubble of insider-y stuff sometimes (with different flavors for NYC SF and the little memetic hierarchies in either place that people want to signal to to Fit In)

I'm not necessarily blaming the algo (though it feels worse to me in this tiktok-coded slop factory format)... but what I miss is seeing real conversations on the timeline instead of endless shilling & short form clips >everything interesting is in group chats or long form now

yes yes, I've played the game to get reach and done my fair of signaling too etc. I get it, there's value in muh distribution but it's just weird to stop and have these moments where you look in the mirror and think... why do I spend time here again?

Writing a book is the hardest thing I've ever done It's like trying to build a startup, but even fewer people think it's going to succeed & even close friends family think you're sort of insane to spend time trying to compete in this lane, especially in a world where the amount of people who read books is shrinking The reason I've been writing (and why I will continue to write full time until the book is finished this summer) is creative compulsion: I've been thinking about this thing and taking notes for it since I was 17 years old, and it feels like I can't pass to the next level of the game of existence until it's done >I'll be happy if 100 people read it or 100,000 people do, but the ultimate goal is to tell a good story... to say something true and universal that makes people who read it understand something new about themselves (and about the human condition broadly) My hope is that it leads to a lot of fun conversations, and I'm excited for the day when I get to share it with the people who I've made friends with on this app over the years >I do miss posting and being more active here, but there's a lot more work and a lot more days in the library between now and then, so I'll still be quieter on the timeline for the next few months I will say though, it's sort of peaceful knowing that you're working on the thing you need to be working on... I hope everyone gets to experience that sense of alignment at some point in their lives

You have to be filling your brain with esoteric inputs if you want to avoid turning into an NPC by talking to Claude/ChatGPT all day... input = output so if we only consume vapid LLM writing it's going to flatten our souls (& originality) and make us all think sound the same

Read old russian short stories, try to understand computer science papers from the 50s, go to plays in your city, watch old sci fi movies & be alone with the weirdness of your own thoughts Whatever floats your boat
