New post: Phages are the most abundant organisms on our planet, yet they remain among the least understood due to their extraordinary genetic diversity. We have developed a way to combine traditional approaches to phages with new computational methods.
This is helping us better understand phages and their genomes: how they interact with bacteria, how they can be used to treat human diseases, and their potential applications in agriculture and aquaculture.

Out in @EvolAppJournal: led by Emily Cavill we show how Seychelles magpie robins lost genetic diversity and accumulated genetic load due to a bottleneck. New populations were established, but lost diversity is v hard to recover, risking long-term survival. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Second day of teaching #bioinformatics in the #phageinformatics workshop in Jinan China. Yesterday the students were introduced to #UNIX for the first time, it was an eye opener for many of them. In the morning we will recap the exercises and test their learnings. Later we will
start exploring sequencing data and run our first QC of the data. They will be trimming the data step by step and visualizing with FastQC after each step to see the effect. It’s important to train students how to treat the raw sequencing data properly to ensure they have a
