Just got this in the mail. Thanks again to everyone who’s voted for me the past two years and has supported and encouraged my work over the last eight seasons. It’s a joy to cover the beautiful game in Nashville!

Australia v Türkiye is the World Cup’s only group-stage match where both countries deliberately turned away from their famous coastal cities and made a quieter inland city the capital. Australia chose Canberra. Türkiye chose Ankara. Stay tuned for more cutting-edge, geography-based World Cup analysis.

Scotsmen in kilts playing the bagpipes at 6am in Boston. The residents of Lawrence, Kansas learning the Algerian national anthem and crowding every practice, South Korean supporters sharing their tequila with Mexican fans before the match, Brazilians taking over Times Square. Bosnian and Canadian fans high fiving before their big match. The World Cup is humanity's biggest party, and continually reminds us of how amazing we can be!

Some of my best memories are of waking up at 2 am with my dad and driving over to watch the US with a friend who had cable at the 2002 World Cup.
I’m not gonna feel bad when America has had to wake up at 3 am to watch these games ourselves for the past like 2 world cups. If they really care about the wc they will deal with a 3 am watch of Australia vs Tunisia like we had to endure

There is a lot of “Paraguay isn’t very good” talk. Full stop. Under Alfaro, they lost just once in WCQ and went 9 straight without defeat. They beat URG, Brazil, & Argentina. They were one of the best defensive teams in the 🌎. Paraguay isn’t bad. #USMNT made them look bad.

Of all the great things about the US performance, I can’t stop thinking about Gio Reyna. Up 3-1, any other manager puts in a player that can help you see it out. Poch gives Reyna a chance to reset the narrative of his USMNT career and he does it with the last kick of the game.

4 variations of movements that the #USMNT used last night to create tons of threat for Paraguay's back four, and some detail around these mechanisms: - Complementary WB & 10 movements - 10s attacking shoulder of FB - Depth = cleared backspace - CMs releasing from deeper
#USMNT getting a lot of joy whenever they stack the midfield (i.e. near side double pivot -> pushes into the last line, base of build becomes 3-1): Paraguay can’t deal with the # of runners behind, getting unlocked via direct passes from WBs, carries inside then played in, etc.

The biggest downside of this World Cup is scheduling. I want to roll out of bed and immediately watch Bahrain and North Macedonia play to the most stale 1-1 draw you’ve ever seen. That’s what this tournament is supposed to be about.

USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving. Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free. I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these." "They just come with the table, man." They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner. This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat. I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared. "Did we…?" "Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless." Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined. My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude." Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man. I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy. Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived. I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most. Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

Loved this from the US. McKennie starting on the top right of the midfield box, with Dest high and wide on the right wing. Dest drops in to call for the ball from Freeman, Paraguay's left back steps to cover, and McKennie runs into the space. Clearly a designed sequence.

Gustavo Alfaro, the Paraguay coach, puts defeat down to the "complexity" of the US approach. "They dominated tactically, technically and physically... they create a pentagon in midfield... they have a solution to every problem".

America’s World Cup hero of last night, Folarin Balogun, is only allowed to play for the US national team because his heavily pregnant Nigerian mother was refused permission by US airlines to fly to the UK, and so the first two months of his life were - by accident - in Brooklyn. It is pretty much inconceivable that if Trump’s immigration enforcement had been in place that Balogun would have been permitted to be born in America. Draw your own conclusions
