A pleasure to be invited by Lisa Blackwell, granddaughter of Prof. David Blackwell, to say a few words about her grandfather at an event this afternoon to promote an upcoming documentary about his life. To quote my colleague Mike Jordan, Blackwell's 'approachability' theory is "the basis of the entire online learning paradigm", and "it took many years for people in the online learning community to realize that David was basically the founder of their field". For example, (Abernethy, Bartlett, Hazan '2011) showed that Blackwell's 'Approachability Theorem' is in fact equivalent to regret minimization for Online Linear Optimization; basically, Blackwell was just 50 years ahead of his time.

Aside from attending the ICPC World Finals, last week in Baku, Azerbaijan I also had a chance to visit the grave of the chair of electrical engineering at Berkeley 1963-68, Lofti Zadeh, who was born and buried in Baku. In 1967 Lofti added CS to the department, turning it from “EE” to “EECS” and making him the first ever chair of @Berkeley_EECS! His tombstone: “world-famous scientist, founder of fuzzy logic theory, professor”

David Patterson is a pioneering contributor to RISC and RAID, Turing Award winner, former Berkeley CS chair and ACM President, now Distinguished Engineer at Google. David today in @thehill: "Virtually every smartphone on the planet runs on a chip paid for by American taxpayers — a chip that I helped invent. Now Congress is moving to cut funding for the @NSF that could lead to future breakthroughs... Cutting the level of government funding for scientific research now would rip those future returns out of American hands and deliver them to our global competitors... All told, American taxpayers invested just under $100 million in the labs I helped lead. Accounting for inflation, technologies that came out of them went on to generate over $1 trillion in product sales. That is a 10,000-to-1 return on investment to the public and surely at least 1,000-to-1 return directly back to the government in taxes. Not from luck, but from decades of public investment... As a scientist, I’m scared. As a taxpayer, I’m livid. We built a lead. Now Washington is ready to give it away... If Congress fails to preserve this funding, we hand our competitive edge and prosperity to someone else."
