On one occasion I had tea with Martyn Lloyd-Jones in Ealing, London, and decided to ask him a question that concerned me. 'Dr. Lloyd-Jones,' I said, 'how can I tell whether I am preaching in the energy of the flesh or in the power of the Spirit?' 'That is very easy,' Lloyd-Jones replied, as I shriveled. 'If you are preaching in the energy of the flesh, you will feel exalted and lifted up. If you are preaching in the power of the Spirit, you will feel awe and humility.'

Last night I took a ministry resident for a hospital visitation. On the way over I gave him the usual speech for this unique ministry venue:
1. Silence the phone
2. Grab a breath mint
3. Bring a Bible
4. Talk little, listen much
5. Read a psalm, then pray it over them
6. Tears okay, but no preaching, no advice, no counsel
7. Treat them with dignity in their felt vulnerability
8. Speak of God and eternity, not the weather
9. Thank and honor the nursing staff
10. Above all: Don't stay long

It’s so easy to coach the great athletes, the hard workers, the good attitudes, the starters. But coaches.. get to know and coach the hard to like, the bad attitudes, the average athletes just as much. Not every kid walks the same path but they need the same love and attention.
