My sourcing team has a way of slipping the most extraordinary nuggets into the most ordinary conversations... this one being the latest.
Lore has it that sometime in the 18th century, farmers near Malihabad left a pile of mangoes to rot over a tax dispute. From that pile sprouted a seedling... that came to be known as the mother Dasheri tree.
The Nawab of Lucknow loved it so much that he posted guards around it day and night, and had every seed drilled so it couldn't be replanted elsewhere. If you ask the locals, you'll hear many colourful theories on how it finally escaped & spread across the North.
To the fruit that survived everything... including a Nawab.
