Black Covid Care has been in the world for just about a week now and we are so grateful for your support! We are thankful to be a small part of lifting up the care that Black people show each other. Here are a few photos from our DC launch last week! blackcovidcare.com
So very excited to be here celebrating w/ @umd_AADHum for thr launch of the ‘Black COVID Care’ website at @stableartsdc—
Created by @alliejrmartin & @blacksoundlab, the site is powered by data significations perf by @BOOMscat, resisting the binary thrust of data collection.
From vaccine and testing pop up sites in Oakland, CA to community organizations feeding their communities in Greensboro, NC, Black people have come together consistently to keep themselves well during a tumultuous time in the world.
What we want to show here is that while these acts of care are indeed extraordinary, they are not new. Black people have been caring for each other in spectacular ways for centuries. So while the stars in our galaxy of care are from Covid, the constellations are from before.
'twas the night before launch! Our last story for the day comes from our foodways tag, and features a program called "Grandma's Hands" that supports grandmothers sharing recipes with younger generations.
ALT Space background with text that reads The Black Sound Lab Presents Black Covid Care --A sonic exploration of how black people have kept themselves well during the pandemic--“Grandma’s Hands” is a program in which Black grandmothers teach recipes while providing participants with fresh produce grown by Black farmers. The program began in 2020 as a part of the Black Food Sovereignty Coalition, an organization that works towards food and land justice for Black people in the Pacific Northwest. This program does the vital work of ensuring that Black knowledges and ways of interacting with food and sustenance will remain dynamic and vibrant.
Good morning! Black Covid Care launches tomorrow! Our first featured story today is the work of artist Hillary Wilson, whose work in medical illustration forms a constellation between our art, education, and health tags.
ALT Space background with text that reads: The Black Sound Lab Presents Black Covid Care-- A Sonic Exploration of how Black Communities have kept themselves well during the pandemic--Medical illustrator Hillary Wilson has been an integral part of the push for more diversity in medical illustration. The lack of diversity in the field not only hinders Black people’s ability to feel comfortable in a healthcare setting but also hinders the ability of patients and doctors to properly diagnose conditions that look different on darker skin.
Two days until Black Covid Care goes live! Until then, we'll be sharing some of the stories that are featured in the project. This one is about NaJe' the creator of the TikTok "Go Lay Down."
All week we'll be highlighting some of the contributors, individuals, and organizations featured in the project. First up: @BOOMscat! This amazing band, which includes Asha Santee and Patience Rowe, was instrumental in creating the soundscape for this project.
