Dr Pali Lehohla: The volume of people that get university degrees has increased, but how they progress from one year to the next has declined.
In contrast to the few that went to university during Apartheid, all of them passed. Very few failed. So the progression there was for every one Black person who went to university started the ratio was almost 1 to 1 compared to the Whites.
Now today for every one Black person who goes to university that ratio is 1 to 6. Whites progress much better than Blacks. So the wastage is so much.
And why does it happen? It’s the foolish policies of this government. When I was at the Heher Commission, I said here I agree with Msholozi: Pay for every child at university. Stop saying that there’s the poor or there’s the rich.
Pay for everyone because they progress faster. Now at this point in time, 158 000 people have their certificates withheld by institutions of higher learning because they can’t pay the school fees. They can’t get a job because they can’t produce anything. How foolish a government can be.
