A union soldier goofing around while getting his portrait taken. In most old photos β€” those taken in the 19th century and early 20th century β€” people aren't smiling or goofing around, which makes this photo so much more striking.

"We got on the plane with a vision of the future, of making it," said a 30-year-old Venezuelan, who recently crossed into Texas. He explained why he boarded the plane with so little information: "Look, when you have no money and someone offers help, well, it means a lot."

TW: body Image When I first imaginen this image, looking at the way the light hit this odd and precarious ladder in our Airbnb in Kentucky, it was not my body I pictured there.

I guess to say to those I’ve photographed in vulnerable states, yes! This is so hard! I understand! You’re so worthy and beautiful no matter the state of your body! Thank you for trusting me to help you see it, but even if you can’t, your body is still a good body no matter what

Thank you @_slowmedown for helping make this image happen and your intuition about the exposure time (we thought 2 mins, and she pushed it to 4, thank you for that!!) adore and love you πŸ’•
