Found this number talk idea when cleaning files. Write one of these on the board: 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, 100 less. Give a number like 39, 399, 3999. Ask student to figure new number.

Quantity x Place Value = Total Value. So important to distinguish the 3 when learning place value! Today was a nuts & bolts lesson where I had to introduce terms and concepts I will be using all year. Next week, we will cover rounding, and the following week – comparing!
