Pastoral faithfulness isn’t just about fighting the right battles — it’s also about refusing the wrong ones. In this article, @booshock and @ZachHollifield show how wise avoidance can protect both shepherd and sheep. ftc.co/resource-library/arti…

Excellent.
Jim Jordan's interpretation of the book of Esther is controversial. I think it's right. Ahasuerus is a good guy. He isn't a drunken despot. He doesn't abuse Vashti. He's Yahweh's deputy to rule the oikoumene, a king on the model of Cyrus. Mordecai's refusal to bow to Haman isn't an example of faithfulness. Mordecai sins by defying of the king's direct command (Est 3:2), and so endangers all the Jews (3:8-15). Esther heroically steps in to rescue her people. She sets a clever trap for Haman (cf. Psa 69:2) and accuses him of plotting against her people (Est 7:1-6). Tables turn. In time, the slaughterers are slaughtered (9:1-19). But Haman begins to slip even before Esther's banquets. The hinge of the story happens when Ahasuerus passes time on a sleepless night reviewing his chronicles (6:1-14).  He remembers Mordecai saved his life (2:21-23) and commands Haman to honor him. That's when Haman and Mordecai, Amalekite and Jew, begin to trade places. Two crucial political lessons follow. First, God's people don't rise to influence by making themselves ungovernable, but by giving honor to whom honor is due.  Because Mordecai learns that lesson, he displaces Haman and rises to become the king's right-hand man (10:1-3). Second, though He's often hidden, God is never inactive. Who knows what terrorizes today's rulers in their dreams? Who knows what wonders the Lord sets in motion when he afflicts the king with insomnia? - Peter Leithart mailchi.mp/theopolisinstitut…

God calls some Christians to study today’s domestic and global landscape, report on it, opine, and make decisions. Thank God for them. We need more Christians with deep knowledge of the world in positions of influence. Most of us aren’t equipped to do it. We don’t know enough to have strong opinions, much less to spout them. What we can do is pray. Every Christian should do that. You don’t need to know the intricacies of international politics to pray for protection of innocents, wisdom and restraint on the part of decision-makers, judgment and mercy, justice and peace. Prayer is a potent political skill, because in prayer we lobby and file appeals in the heavenly Senate where all the real decisions are made.

Many Christians are so worried about over-realized eschatology that they fall into a drastically under-realized eschatology. Over-realized eschatology is an error, but under-realized is also a serious flaw. It leads the church to forget the power at her disposal, and can become an excuse for inaction and failure. It (unintentionally) despises the Lord's gifts. What is true now? Jesus is King and the Father has handed Him the nations; His Spirit has come; resurrection life and new creation are unleashed on the world; Jesus goes with us as we scatter to disciple nations and call kings and judges to kiss the world's true King. Believe this, and rejoice.

Having just come from ETS, I’ve come to believe that winsomeness might not be quite at the center of the bullseye for what besets so much of evangelicalism. I do believe it may be related to what’s at the center, but i also believe wisdom should inform the delivery of the Christian message, which may not be identical across every context, and I believe Christians should try to exude joy — being wyn-some, “joy-some.” So what do I think is to be at the center? Respectability™. Or, what the Bible refers to as fear of man. Now, respectability is categorically different from the genuine article that is commended by Paul in the pastoral epistles when he says elders ought to be well-thought of by outsiders. We could refer to this virtue as being respectful. Here’s the all-important difference: Respectability is wholly dependent on society’s determination of one’s respectfulness, not with the virtue of respectful integrity. This means your measure of success regarding respectability depends entirely on socio-cultural standards — which are always changing and frequently contrary to righteousness — and not God’s standards. Too many at ETS, and evangelicalism at large, are beset by Respectability™.
