You can love someone and not know it,
like the day I almost lost him—
eyes locked, their shared laughter
in a distant kitchen.
Rage, shielding the fear in my ribs.
Knowing myself whole
yet falling through the missing piece.
(Unease) latent in the thorns
of a rose night in winter.
He is far—so far—
and impossibly, he is also here:
subtle, sure,
softening every exhale,
cradling my descent to sleep.
