Antonio Banderas, representing the world
of culture, was on cloud nine to chat with Pope Leo after his speech.
To the applause of the packed giant sports and event arena in Madrid, Banderas affirmed:
โThe relationship between the Catholic Church and art has not only been fruitful: it has been decisive.โ
โWe are not afraid to say that the Church has been the greatest producer of art in the history of humanity.โ
โAt the heart of this creative impulse is the one who transcends centuries, styles, and cultures, and who has certainly been the most represented figure in the history of art: Jesus Christ,โ Banderas said tonight.
In a meeting that seeks to answer what does it mean to the world today to โLift up your eyesโ - the theme of the trip to Spain, Banderas said that โArt must be an alternative to all forms of violence.โ
โJust as Christ himself did, the artist must act with courage and not abandon being a critical voice to society, to art itself, and to religion itself.โ
