State education departments will be able to require teacher candidates to show elementary knowledge of math and spelling. Medical schools will have no more excuse for wildly different standards of admission for black and white applicants; the medical licensing exam will have no more excuse for jettisoning grades in favor of a watered-down pass-fail system. But it is too soon to celebrate a return to excellence and to assume that merit will never again penalized as racist. The clock is ticking on the Trump administration.
