Bondi Junction needs a La Paz style gondola down to the beach.
We’re at Waverley Council tonight speaking in favour of the Bondi Junction masterplan for 3000 new homes. Most speakers are in favour. Someone complains they don’t have enough open space (ignore the park that’s bigger than the suburb)

"Stranger Danger" is sublimated fear of cars.
It would be interesting to pair this with a survey about what parents' primary fears are. My primary fear is cars. We encourage our kids to walk pretty far, but they're limited by scary roads.

Imagine if the government said “we’re doing a cash handout for cost of living, but households without cars get nothing, and households with more than one car get more”. People would think it was bizarre. But that’s exactly what this is!
We’re taking 20% off rego to help Victorians deal with the cost of living. Like cheaper public transport, this won’t fix everything, but it’s immediate action I can take to make a difference.

Outside of dangerous and illegal goods housing is probably one of the last bastions of regulated supply. Do immigrants cause bread shortages, car shortages or any other traded good.

While studying for the citizenship test, I learned about Australia's various immigration waves. From 1851-1861, we doubled the pop. with annual growth rates of 10-11%. In today's terms that'd be the equivalent of ~3M people. And that was with 1850s tech and infrastructure. 1/

Architecture is cool but the average Tokyo street has 5 of the ugliest buildings you've ever seen in your life, no street trees, about 100 power lines hanging 5 feet over your head, and it still embarrasses 99.9% of American streets as a place you actually want to spend time.

the tomb was empty after three days because even jesus understood that sitting on prime real estate without building anything on it is a moral failure. he rose and LEFT. the man had better land use instincts than every surface parking lot owner in america

Wonderful development! Here’s what the Glebe Society had to say about it when it was approved:
75 new social housing apartments in Glebe, Sydney A cross laminated timber (CLT) structure, robust brick cladding, stunning recessed brick balconies, fully-electric and 6 star green star rating. Would *love* to see more housing like this! By JPW Architects

This is shaping up as the most consistent finding in housing studies: Building lots of luxury housing can reduce rents at the top of the market—but the people it helps most are renters struggling to afford even the least desirable units

If people preferred houses to apartments there’d be no need to ban apartments so widely.

Fun fact - influencers will take videos of this place to show how cool it is and the urban planners won’t ever let you build anything like this ever again

This attitude towards adding some affordable housing (and height) to the Balmain leagues development in Rozelle is pretty grim. Between 2016-21, that is during the last housing boom, the suburb built minus 24 new homes.

As long as you had your seatbelt on, it would have been pretty cool to be in that seat! I mean, not in the moment. In the moment it would be terrifying. But after the plane landed and you calmed down I think you’d appreciate it.
