Guess this isn’t a very controversial statement anymore.
Replying to @jomc
I have long had the theory that sustained, historically low interest rates are one of the under appreciated things driving the current dystopian tech boom. Returns in safer assets suck, driving money into increasingly crazy tech stuff, consolidating economic power with big tech.

Someone just emailed to offer me $100 for my Twitter account, so I figure I’d better tweet something to keep my account active.

Reminder that Twitter was nowhere near bankruptcy in May. Q2 loss of $244 million. Around $2.7 billion of cash in the bank. Obviously not a healthy biz. But not close to a bankrupt one. s22.q4cdn.com/826641620/file…

As always people should read @juliandibbell's MY TINY LIFE for a window into how this has been an active problem for *decades* before social media even existed. Governance is not a technical problem, ever. *Everything* on the net started out technolibertarian. All of it evolved.

I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means

As I said back in April.
Every media organization should set up a Mastodon instance right now IMHO.

I think one thing that pundits aren’t considering enough is the possibility that Musk, having blundered his way into a horrendously bad deal, is acting entirely impulsively and out of pure narcissistic injury. nytimes.com/2022/12/13/techn…

Stand by this
I think I’ve finally managed to crystallize exactly what it is I find so obnoxious about Musk: in his glib trollishness, he powerfully exemplifies the nightmare of unchecked billionaire power. Imposing his will on humanity for the lulz.

Matt Taibbi and Elon Musk rummaged through millions of emails & Slack messages from pre-Musk Twitter & all they found was employees deliberating & consulting w/each other about how to fairly apply & enforce rules. But I get it.. To a rich white man, that seems very oppressive

So yeah, it's basically just cringey Neil Stephenson-ism driving all this.

1. Social media must be resilient to corporate and government control. 2. Only the original author may remove content they produce. 3. Moderation is best implemented by algorithmic choice.

Once I'm ensconced in my underground tweet bunker, no one will be able to stop me from posting Hunter Biden's dick, as god intended.

But it’s cool, because thanks to perfect algorithmic filter bubbles, only other Hunter Biden dick pick enjoyers will be forced to engage with my content.
