It's a new year again, and after being busy throughout 2024, I decided to post my first blog post at the beginning of the year — of course, after parked for a few months in draft 🙂 Link to the blog post: notes.softwarearchitect.id/p… Please let me know what you think.

What is Port Forwarding, a.k.a. Port Mapping? If you ran into this fancy term but were too afraid to ask, Port Forwarding is just a way to say that data addressed to one socket is redirected to another by an intermediary (e.g., a network router, a proxy process, or the kernel).

Tiktok's Monolith paper is a must read. It shows that you don't need a social graph to make an addictive product if you nail real-time recommendations that update AS each user scrolls. Very few great applied CS papers exist and even fewer that made a 1B user product!

Anthropic just dropped an insane new paper. AI models can "fake alignment" - pretending to follow training rules during training but reverting to their original behaviors when deployed! Here's everything you need to know: 🧵

Another way of looking at this is: if the real product of any software engineering team is shared understanding, if the speed of sense-making is a core limiting factor on the speed of delivery, then strong, futureproof engineering teams are 🌸continuous learning machines🌸
Replying to @mipsytipsy
Number 2: The product of software engineering teams is shared understanding. This one might take a bit more exposition. But *understanding* the problem and the solution is what software engineers do -- that, and then making it understandable *for each other*.
