In 1999, Indian lawyer Tungnath Chaturvedi bought two train tickets (Mathura to Moradabad) for βΉ70 total. The clerk charged him βΉ90 overcharging by βΉ20 (~$0.25).He complained immediately but got no refund. So he filed a case in consumer court against Indian Railways.
After 22 years, more than 100 hearings, and fighting all the way (even to the Supreme Court on jurisdiction), he finally won in August 2022.
The court ordered:Refund of the βΉ20
12% interest per year on it (from 1999β2022)
βΉ15,000 (~$188) compensation for his trouble, stress, and costs
Chaturvedi (then 66) said it was never really about the money it was about principle, standing up to small-scale corruption and arbitrary behaviour.
