As you may have heard, this summer Southern California had a salp bloom… but what exactly is a salp? 🤔
Salps are gelatinous planktonic animals that belong to the Tunicate Phylum. We saw so many on our summer cruise!
🌊🚢 Exciting news from the ocean! The CalCOFI ship was out in full force, conducting vital research off the coast of Manhattan Beach.🌿🔬

#Fish Spotlight: Caulolatilus princeps (#Ocean Whitefish)
#larva was collected near the #ChannelIslands during fall #CalCOFI 2014 survey
The larvae are ID'd by their stout body, large head, early formation of preopercular spines & spiny ridges on their head

Thanks to @PatagoniaVTA for having us in store to table last Friday! Had some great conversations about #smallfish and our ocean off of California!

When Annie Adams and Mallika Gupta began their internship with @calcofi, many of their peers didn't know about a major looming threat in the Pacific: decreasing oxygen levels, which cause hypoxia. So they decided to tell the story through data: bit.ly/42NVMjf
THE STORY IN THE DATA
Marine science interns turn to storytelling to clarify the numbers behind hypoxia in California

Spring #CalCOFI 2023 a success!
We ended in San Francisco on Monday to a beautiful view of the #GoldenGateBridge
We're collaborating with the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, #ChannelIslands & #MontereyBay to enhance our respective missions
We incorporated new CalCOFI stations within these Sanctiaries
Last fall, we had a special cruise to test out these new stations & this cruise was the 1st time we've fully integrated these stations into our routine cruise pattern.
Thanks to NOAA @sanctuaries for sending out such great scientists to help us out. They did a fantastic job & we hope to see them on future CalCOFI cruises
Can't wait to continue this #sciencecollaboration
