“We are entering into this new era of media much more humble and with smaller budgets and smaller staffs and lower expectations. But I think that in some ways allows for more sustainable growth.”

“Everyone wants a Morning Brew-like newsletter. They want those engagement numbers. They want the tens of millions in very profitable revenue. But the idea flatlines when I ask them how many people they’re willing to put into the product.” — @JayCoDonamediaoperator.com/newslette…
Over 340 people have been detained near the makeshift memorials dedicated to Alexey Navalny in the last two days, human rights non-profit OVD-Info reported on Saturday.
230 of them were detained today. According to human rights activists, people’s detentions took place in 30 Russian cities.
“I have to go back.” Speaking just before he returned to Russia, Navalny told me: “I don’t think that I can have such a privilege of being safe in Russia, but I have to go back, because I don’t want this group of killers [to] exist in Russia. I don’t want Putin ruling Russia.”
Every former employee of The Messenger has a story to tell about its sudden demise. For this @AirMailWeekly piece, I spoke with 30 sources and found out there's been one silver lining out of the startup's failure: a cathartic online community called the ex-Messengers
Today we're launching a GoFundMe campaign to help former @TheMessenger employees, who were left without severance and health insurance when the company abruptly closed last week.
Funds raised will go to help with rent, medicine, groceries more. ❤️

One thing I’ve been thinking about is how many incredible (and award-winning!) @gridnews stories, features, investigative reports, 360s and interactives have also been lost. Grid forever!
I also wanted to say thanks for the amazing outpouring of support — texts, emails, messages, job leads, DMs — I’ve received in the past few days from Messenger colleagues, former coworkers, and other people in media.
Hire the incredibly talented Messenger staff!
Today’s the first day in almost 2 years that I haven’t sent a newsletter, now that The Messenger is over. 🧵
Many of us joined from the incredible Grid News team when we were acquired last year. Many thanks to @lkmcgann and @colinjones for bringing me on, and to the whole team.

We had big plans for a Politics newsletter featuring @mattholt33, @stephanie_murr and our incredible politics team led by @mkady. It would have been a must-read!
All I can say is: Hire my Messenger colleagues!
