Five years ago, Uganda’s gold exports had flattened out at around $201m a year. Then in Nov 2021, bombs exploded from backpacks of alleged suicide bombers in Kampala. The attackers were instantly identified as ADF rebels and UPDF stormed Congo to stump out the threat.
In the following year, Uganda’s gold exports increased 10-fold to over $2b.
And that wasn’t the first time things had happened in that order. There’s an undeniable correlation between ADF attacks and our mineral wealth.
