Media critic Adam Johnson says that even if a consensus eventually emerges that Israel’s assault on Gaza constituted a genocide, there is unlikely to be meaningful accountability for the political and media figures who enabled it.
Johnson pointed to former Biden administration officials quickly returning to influential liberal institutions as evidence that the political establishment has already moved on, and argues that without an organized resistance movement that explicitly pushes accountability for Gaza to the front and center, those who backed the genocide will continue to be reintegrated into mainstream political and public life without consequence.

🇺🇸 Avril Haines, who served as director of national intelligence under President Joe Biden from 2021 to 2025, will become the next president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the influential think tank announced Thursday.
Haines, the first woman to lead the U.S. intelligence community, will takes over the foreign-policy institution on September 28. As DNI, she oversaw the 18 U.S. intelligence agencies and served as Biden’s principal intelligence adviser through the first 15 months of Israel’s assault on Gaza, which UN experts, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and leading genocide scholars have determined to be a genocide.
During that period, Haines was among the senior officials tasked under National Security Memorandum 20 with assessing whether Israel was using U.S. weapons in compliance with U.S. and international law. The administration accepted Israeli assurances and continued arms transfers, despite daily video evidence of Israel’s atrocities, and whistleblowers and members of Congress describing “credible and deeply troubling reports” that those weapons were being used unlawfully. In July 2024, Haines also spoke of U.S. campus protesters against the genocide as potential targets of Iranian influence, drawing condemnation from civil rights groups. Board chair Jane Hartley called Haines “an extraordinary leader whose trusted voice shaped some of the toughest global decisions.”
