WIU has 7,500 students, with 285 tenured and 81 tenure-track faculty (plus about 80 instructors). It's not a great situation, but it's clear to see that the university is going after one of its largest salary line items.

Not indexing rates or including annual changes leads to large single year increases regardless of ownership status. A public utility would have just as sizable increases (and have).

Take Willowbrook's increase in 2023. Depending on your water usage, say 13k gallons (a lot, but not unreasonable if you water your yard), you can easily get to a $ 30-a-month increase.

Look at some of these reports from the @govfinanceUIC. They clearly outline that rate increases (and therefore bill increases) tend to be quite large. And that's mostly among public providers.

This is unequivocally a good thing. Regardless of which one, local elected office is a considerable time commitment, and we should adequately compensate people to do it. Also, it allows more people, some of whom don't run because of financial concerns, to run for office.

New from me and @leland_suzanne in @LGStudies on special district dissolution. We find limited evidence that dissolution is creation in reverse (TELs on cities ↓ exits; home rule ↑ exits), but the results are extremely fragile. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

tl;dr granting cities more powers generally leads to fewer special districts, as their need to circumvent restrictive state laws is lessened. These results disappear in district subgroup analyses.

Voters in Gwinnett County, Georgia, voted to approve a measure creating the new city of Mulberry in northeastern Gwinnett. Voters will elect the five new city council members at the general election in November 2024.

In northeastern Gwinnett County, Georgia, voters will decide on a ballot measure today to create a new city called Mulberry. Mulberry would have around 41,245 residents. If approved, this would make Mulberry the 24th largest city in Georgia.

Special district dissolution methods are often difficult to parse. This one no longer provides any services, but the referendum to dissolve it failed (so it exists as a taxing body doing nothing). Now, the legislature steps in.
