Are any academics still on Twitter? If not I’ll just tell Elon Musk about my award, hope he’s happy for me (I’ll take a Tesla). An honour to receive the 2024 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding ECR. Lots of rejections this year, so it’s nice to celebrate a win!

I love research because it combines my two favorite things: sitting and anxiety

🧵Our lab study on the impact of a meal vs snack vs no eating during nightshifts on glucose metabolism is out now in Diabetologia! (1/4) pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3942…
A word of warning to nightshift workers: go easy on the midnight snacks and late meals. They may be putting you at higher risk of #diabetes, #heartdisease and #obesity, according to new research from @UniversitySA @UniofAdelaide and @sahmriAU brnw.ch/21wOnhQ

So while no food at night may be best for glucose metabolism (and reducing long-term health burden of shiftwork), a snack could be best for performance and safety. This makes advice to workers challenging! (3/4)

For now we can say: if eating at night, avoid large meals and opt for a small snack. A low GI, minimally processed snack MAY be less of a challenge to glucose metabolism at night and reduce the effect of the snack we saw in this study. Important next questions for research! (4/4)

I’m a savvy, modern researcher. I have dozens of windows and hundreds of tabs open at all times, each containing articles I’ll never read. I yearn for Chrome to crash and deliver me from a nightmare of my own creation.
