for all the writers out there, i hope you work with editors that are willing to fight for you. this is one of the most important parts of my job whether i'm going to battle for story placements, freelance rates, or a credit. it's a huge disservice if no one will advocate for you.

usually, writing is fun. if you are finding that writing is not fun, you may be entitled to compensation

Being a writer means avoiding writing all day while also wondering why your story isn’t finished.

You should start writing again because it isn't an exclusive club you have to level up to get into. There is nothing prestigious about any of this. The Literary World's most gatekept secret is that it is dying. We are all dying. Let's write unhinged poems about it and live más.

A company asked why it was so hard to hire a good writer. I told them it was because good writing is an illusion: what people call good writing is actually good thinking, and of course good thinkers are rare.

Came up with a fine scene for a comic I’m writing. Left the computer. Had coffee. Played a song. After 20 minutes a more interesting version of the scene appeared in my mind. Every part of the process was writing time. The coffee, the music, stepping away. It’s all writing.

I see a lot of organizations relying too much on slide decks relative to actual written memos for their internal communications. Presentations are great but prose has a unique value in clarifying thought and creating an unambiguous record.

my writing process is basically to write one long sentence with a thousand commas that is actually a whole paragraph, and then, painstakingly go back and cut it up into less nuanced pieces for general consumption
