🎉 "Behind the Scenes at BADCamp 2024" 🌉 In his latest article, Luke McCormick @cellear takes us on a vivid journey through the highs, challenges, and community spirit that made this year’s Bay Area Drupal Camp unforgettable. From the meticulous pre-event setup to the inspiring keynote by Kristen Pol @kristen_pol, and the lively post-camp gatherings, Luke recounts every detail of an organizer’s experience. Held in Oakland, California, @BADCamp 2024 re-energized the Drupal community. Attendees had the chance to dive into sessions ranging from Tim Lehnen’s @timlehnen "Next Decade of Drupal" vision to JD Leonard’s @drupal_jd fun “Cooking with Drupal 11” presentation. Luke even shared his own insights on simplifying Drupal maintenance, which were well-received, paving the way for his upcoming presentation at @NEDCamp. Each year, BADCamp reaffirms that the Drupal community is more than a network—it’s a family. 🥂 Here’s to another year of innovation, connection, and inspiration! To learn more, check the story out from the below link! thedroptimes.com/43830/luke-… #DrupalCommunity #BADCamp2024 #DrupalEvents #OpenSource #LukeMcCormick

Well done, @netsolcares. </sarcasm> The last domain name that I have on you is listed as expiring tomorrow, May 24. As I tweet this, it's still May 23 in all of the US and even all of Europe, yet your website is telling me the domain is already expired.

I had come to your site (reluctantly) with the intention of renewing this domain for another year, even though that would cost me more. I came a day early, to make sure I wouldn't run into problems. But because of this and other issues, instead I'm moving the domain elsewhere.

I put together a site to showcase (as a start) the "31 Days Of Simplifying Drupal" (hot takes) series I did in January. It's not finished (like...maybe I should make it responsive? 🤣) but you can take a look anyway. simplifydrupal.com/

21/31 days of making Drupal simpler and easier to manage: Beware of "Drupalisms!" Drupal seems to have its own language for things, which can make communication with the rest of the world confusing. What the rest of the world calls plugins or extensions are called "modules" in Drupal. "Pages" are "nodes," "entities," or even "bundles." A "web developer" everywhere else is identified as a "site builder" by Drupalists. "Front-end Developer?" Drupal calls them "themers." If the VP says they'd like a new template, don't fire up the the text editor and start writing Twig, they're probably just trying to tell you that they need a new content type. #drupal #webdevelopment #31daysofsimplifyingdrupal

9/31 days of making Drupal simpler and easier to manage: Create a custom admin interface. Drupal makes it really easy to create beautiful and functional interfaces. Site owners put tremendous time and effort into crafting their visitor's experiences, but almost everybody just points their own people at Drupal's default bare-bones content management display and leaves it at that. Why? It's really easy to create a few custom Views for your editors -- so you should. #drupal #webdevelopment #31daysofsimplifyingdrupal

31 days of making Drupal simpler and easier to manage, day 5. Happy Friday --let's talk about custom modules! The ability to create custom modules is one the most powerful features of Drupal. Most of Drupal's functionality is supplied by modules just like the ones you can make yourself. There's literally nothing that can be done in Drupal that can't be done with a custom modules. So you might be surprised to learn that my advice is: Don't do it! Or at least, try to see if it's possible to get the results you seek without building a custom module. While it's often relatively easy for a programmer to achieve a desired effect with custom programming (especially if they've been recently working with some of the relevant systems) it's much harder to maintain custom code than it is to upgrade Drupal core and major contributed modules. Carefully consider whether there's a way to get what you need done. (If you do conclude that you should create a custom module, I'll have suggestions later on about how to minimize your pain.) #drupal #webdevelopment #php

4/31 days of making Drupal simpler and easier to manage. Today's tip: Turn off the theme! (On a development copy of your site, of course, not the live one.) When switched to an included theme, or a common contrib theme like Boostrap, everything (or at least, almost everything) on your site should function. If it doesn't, it means you've built functionality into your theme, making it brittle and hard to maintain. #drupal #webdevelopment

3/31 days of ways to make Drupal easier to manage. Today's tip: You should have a site builder role that is distinct from the module developers and themers on your project.  The site builder is the person in charge of the site, not the coders!  A typical professional site has several content creators, several module developers, a themer, and several project managers of various types.  Avoid the temptation to mix the roles.  Installing, updating, and configuring modules and themes is easy to do if they're properly designed and documented, but they rarely are.  Make sure they are, by separating responsibilities – don't let the module and theme developers install and turn on their own modules and themes, make them turn them over to the site builder, who has the time and incentive to keep track of (and document) how things fit together -- and who can extract the necessary information out of the coders, if necessary. #drupal #webdevelopment

2/31 days to make Drupal simpler. Today's tip: prioritize content owners over coders. The chief editor, not the chief programmer, should be the most powerful user, with the authority to turn on and off every extension (modules/themes/etc) on the site. #drupal #webdevelopment
