let's talk about xcopy's "right-click and save as guy" that snoop dogg bought for $7 million. it was created specifically to mock people who said nfts were worthless because you could just right-click and save them. and then it sold for seven million dollars. that's the most perfect intersection of art and commentary i've seen. the piece is about its own value being questioned. and that questioning made it more valuable. it's almost too perfectly meta. and this is what great memes do too. they're self-aware. they comment on themselves. they know what they are and that awareness is part of the piece. "nobody: absolutely nobody: me:" memes are about the format of memes. "is this a pigeon" is about misunderstanding obvious things which is what memes do when they repurpose images. the best ones operate on multiple levels simultaneously. surface level humor. deeper commentary. self-referential awareness. and somehow we're supposed to believe this is less sophisticated than traditional art. it's not less sophisticated. it's differently sophisticated. it's art that's evolved to work in an environment of infinite reproduction and instant distribution. and the fact that it works so well in that environment is proof of its artistic merit not evidence against it. the medium shapes the message and the internet shaped a new kind of art that's perfectly adapted to how humans actually communicate now
