Did you know that the City of Toronto is aiming for 75% of trips under 5 km to be taken on foot, transit or bike by 2030? It’s an ambitious target, and if we maintain the status quo, it will not be met. 1/

Study summary: • Drivers make ~6,800 illegal turns or straight-through's *per day* on King Street Transit Priority Corridor • less than 0.3% are ticketed for it • 99.7% of drivers are not being fined for breaking the law on the King Street Transit Priority Corridor #TOpoli
Our data viz team looked at intersection-level vehicle movement from @cityoftoronto & ticket data from @TorontoPolice to analyze how often drivers make illegal movements on TO's King St Transit Priority Corridor & how often they receive traffic tickets: schoolofcities.github.io/kin…

This is very simple to fix. Automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR). It has existed for over 20 years. It is used to enforce the Congestion Charge in London, UK. It is used on the 407 in Ontario. Congestion in the core of the city is a new level of madness. The efficiency of transit is - hands down - the only way out of this mess. This is why we created the wildly successful King Street Transit Priority Corridor. And it worked. So failing to enforce the transit priority on the corridor is just laziness at this point. The technology exists. The cost/benefit analysis supports the investment. We don’t need a study. We don’t need public consultation. We need leadership. “Streetcars travelling slower on King Street than before the transit corridor pilot project” toronto.citynews.ca/2023/11/…

Let's connect some dots. The country is on fire and yet we are facing eviscerating the Green Belt and clearcutting 850 trees at Ontario Place as if climate change were not a serious threat.

It took 50 years for these trees on the West Island at Ontario Place to mature. Why would we destroy them now?

As we breathe smoke from climate change-worsened fires, consider that @fordnation and @ThermeCanada will: -bulldoze parkland and 850 mature trees -build a giant indoor energy sink of a spa -needlessly replace rather than repair the Science Centre -spend $500M public $ on parking

Today, Doug Ford again refused to acknowledge the link between the climate crisis and raging wildfires. We need a gov't that acts to mitigate climate change. One that isn't paving over our Greenbelt—a massive carbon sink. This isn't normal. We can do so much better. #onpoli

Yesterday was the first day CO₂ at Mauna Loa was 425 ppm. This is: -likely the first time in the past 800,000 years. -possibly not seen in over 3 million years (mid-pliocene warm period). -A CO₂ forcing equal to 2.5-4°C of warming and 5-25 meters higher global sea level.
