The Isle of Man is getting its first ever Startup Weekend. I'm the lead organiser. A group of us have been putting this together voluntarily for months. We just think the island deserves this. Here's how it works. Friday evening, anyone can pitch an idea. 60 seconds. That's all you get. Then everyone votes, and the most voted ideas move forward. If your idea gets picked, you've got one job, convince people to join your team. Walk the room, sell your vision, and get three to five people who believe in it. That's your team for the weekend. Then the real work starts. Saturday and Sunday, you're building. But not just in the room. You go outside, talk to real people, and test whether anyone actually wants what you're building. Product market fit isn't something you guess at, you go find out. Sunday evening, every team presents their prototype to judges. 54 hours after it all started. I've been involved in these since 2016. Spent years mentoring and judging after that. I've seen what happens when you get the right people in a room for a weekend. It's worth it. Every time. We're targeting 50 participants, 10 teams, 5 people each, working on 10 ideas and presenting 10 prototypes by Sunday evening. That's the room we want to build. We're charging £15, not as a ticket price, but as a commitment to actually show up. That covers all three days, including meals. The event is on 10–12 July at Launchpad, Hillary House, Douglas. Back pain cancelled my workday. Months of long desk hours caught up with me today. Ten-hour sitting stretches during release pushes felt like commitment at the time. My spine logged every one of them and chose today to settle up. Founders maintain every system except the one carrying all the others. The servers get monitoring and the runway gets a spreadsheet, while the body runs on whatever attention is left over, which is usually none. Today turned into stretches, short walks, and work in fragments at a fraction of normal pace. The roadmap will have to wait for the hardware.
