Given the recent attempts by certain individuals to portray themselves as guardians of Ukraine’s interests within the chess community, let us briefly return to the recent past and look at the outcome of the public vote at the FIDE General Assembly during the Olympiad and Congress in Budapest less than two years ago. All countries on our ticket supported Ukraine unconditionally (Poland, Czech Republic, Iceland, Croatia, Ireland, and the Faroe Islands), while this was not the case for some other European countries. It is particularly striking that Georgia and Greece did not stand fully with Ukraine, yet today their representatives are loudly lecturing others. Since the first day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I have stood firmly with Ukraine, its people, and the Ukrainian chess community. I have chosen actions over words. My support has never been limited to statements. Throughout this war, I have supported Ukrainian players, trainers, arbiters, organizers, and their families, and I will continue to do so in the future, regardless of circumstances. It is not in my nature to speak publicly about everything I do. Throughout my years in chess, I have focused on helping people, supporting our community, and contributing to the development of the game rather than seeking recognition. However, when my position is questioned, I believe it is important to state it clearly. Poland and Ukraine have a strong and lasting friendship, especially during the most difficult moments of recent history. As a Pole, I am proud that my country has stood in solidarity with Ukraine, and I am proud to have personally contributed to supporting the Ukrainian chess community. As President of Hetman GKS Katowice chess club, I have actively helped Ukrainian chess players and their families affected by the war by providing opportunities, assistance, and a welcoming environment when they needed it most. These are not promises or political slogans; they are concrete actions. As a member of the FIDE management board, I strongly opposed the proposals adopted during the 2025 General Assembly that aimed to lift sanctions. My position has always been based on principles. It has not changed, and it will not change in the future. I stand with Ukraine. I stand with Ukrainian chess. And I will continue to do so through actions, not just words.
