Chris Klomp is the Marco Rubio of the Department of Health and Human Services. He’s the Medicare director, Trump’s drug price negotiator and, since February, Health Secretary Kennedy’s most powerful aide. Here’s my story on his outsized role: politico.com/news/2026/06/12…

NEW on what led to the unprecedented export controls slapped on Anthropic last night: - On a call with Dario Amodei, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Cyber Director Sean Cairncross urged Anthropic to voluntarily remove the model and coordinate with the government to address percieved vulnerabilities - Amodei asked for more time and information, but he made no commitments to pull the model. Bessent told Amodei directly that he was making a “bad decision" - Shortly after the call, the Trump administration imposed its export control - “Export controls were a last resort after begging them for hours to work with us,” a senior White House official said. “This was not something we wanted to do, but our hands were tied.” - After we published our story, a person close to Anthropic disputed that official's account: - “The White House gave 90 minutes to take the models down, with no details on the actual threat. There was never any begging — or asking — for them to work with us, just a declared 90 minute deadline,” the person said. w @SophiaCai99

NEW: Inside the 24-hrs before WH slapped export controls on Anthropic - Last Thursday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised concerns about Fable jailbreak to Trump admin - Friday AM, Sean Cairncross, Bessent, Susie etc. held WH call to discuss - Then White House started reaching out to Anthropic to speak with Dario Amodei, who was at a wellness retreat. - When Amodei was finally available past 1pm, he had three tense phone calls with a combo of ppl including Cairncross, Bessent, Lutnick, Kessler, Will Scharf, Richard Walters, and Walker Barrett. -Amodei tried to clear up what he assumed was a misunderstanding. He defended the guardrails and distinguished between universal and non-universal jailbreak - Cairncross and Bessent were unmoved and asked Amodei to take down Fable and work with the admin to fix the vulnerabilities. (A WH official said Amazon’s findings were run past the NSA and they felt they had “proof.”) - Amodei asked for more time and info, but he made no commitments to pull the model - Bessent told Amodei directly at one point that he was making a “bad decision” - By Friday evening, the Trump admin imposed its export controls. - “Export controls were a last resort after begging them for hours to work with us,” senior WH official said. 🚨 more on AI dividends/equity stakes for the American public today from the president: Trump repeated again that he is having a meeting with top executives of major AI companies "soon" to talk about "giving back something to the public" "I think they'll do that and I think it'll make it very popular"
Trump's apparent endorsement of the public getting a stake in AI companies scrambled the tech policy debate -- but it’s unclear how quickly the administration is ready to move. The White House has yet to invite major tech companies to a meeting that the president had said could occur as early as this week, people familiar with the policy discussions said.

My latest: MAHA moms say their vote is up for grabs in the midterms after a string of perceived losses on pesticides and chemical regulations, disappointing leadership picks and an unpopular war in Iran. “The swing Kennedy people aren’t going to show up at this point.”

Trump's comments today that "pieces" of AI companies could be given as equity to Americans are an interesting acknowledgement on the growing unpopularity of AI: “We’re talking about it where the American people can benefit from the success of AI. And by doing that, they’re going to like it better,” Trump said when discussing the policy today

Trump just now confirmed reporting from NOTUS and WSJ that he is indeed open to some variation of a public wealth fund or dividend with AI companies -- and plans to meet with them all "probably" next week. “There’s a concept out there, there’s so much money and it’s so big that there are concepts where pieces could be given to the American public, where the American public essentially becomes a partner with the companies,” Trump told reporters. “I have spoken to all of them.”
