My debut book is OUT TODAY! 'Such Great Heights: The Complete Cultural History of the Indie Rock Explosion' is about how indie rock changed the mainstream and the mainstream changed indie rock in the 21st century. Buy it and let me know what you think: read.macmillan.com/lp/such-g…

I think between the Knicks joy and the local/visitor “we like each other” vibes of the World Cup, Americans are experiencing something wholly patriotic, fun, accepting, insane, and without meanness or ego driven. The UFC timing couldn’t be worse for Trump. This ship has sailed ⬇️.
I still am struggling to wrap my head around the fact this is actually happening… Don’t care what your political views are, EVERYONE should be absolutely embarrassed & ashamed that this is happening at the Lincoln Memorial & White House. What a joke.

The discourse about hipsters and stomp-clap was relevant to my book SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS, so I attempted to provide some context about the evolution of the hipster and why even late-stage mainstream-friendly hipsters turned their noses up at that stuff suchgreatheights.substack.co…

Ashley is correct. This confusion drives me nuts. In my book, I argue that the emergence of stomp-clap was a big factor in hipsters going all-in on pop, rap, R&B, electronic, basically getting as far away from a Mumford/Lumineers style as possible. read.macmillan.com/lp/such-g…
look, i'm not humorless so i can get behind jokes looking back on the hipster era just as much as the next girl who spent too much money at american apparel. But people have GOT to stop associating that scene with stomp clap lumineers shit. it's inaccurate!

The hipsters had been doing a woodsy thing with freak-folk in the mid-2000s and then Bon Iver/Fleet Foxes in the late 2000s. Stomp-clap was the moment hipsters distanced themselves from folk-rock because it evolved indie-folk into music for basic/normie Jason Mraz listeners.

I tried to provide a little more depth and context about why stuff like this meme is ahistorical and hipsters did not listen to stomp-clap... suchgreatheights.substack.co…

when the bubble bursts I hope companies like this get flushed first
Suno - a company that trained on "essentially all music files of reasonable quality that are accessible on the open Internet", and argues it does not need to pay to do so - is now valued at $5.4 billion. They will pay for GPUs, and for engineers, but not, apparently, for the music they use - other people's music - without which their models would not work. I know lots of musicians who will be upset. I am with them.

I had a long, fascinating chat with Ben, Nick, and Jason from Death Cab about their return to the indie ranks, their hard-hitting new LP, coping with divorce during their anniversary tour, thinking like a superfan, why they'll never do a cruise, and more stereogum.com/2500957/indie-…
