Is this the first #Oscars in history to end early?!? I don't hate it.

Power just went completely out at our house in DC for a minute, then came back on - anyone else?

Every morning I'm frustrated anew at the incoherence of @washingtonpost - if you're going to cut sports section, culture section, etc., why keep pretending you have them? Wouldn't it make more sense to overhaul your layout rather than keeping on with skeleton sections?

Newspapers are struggling. Orchestras are struggling. And yet they have bigger audiences than ever. @AJDoug gives a smart analysis of how our information economy is throttling some of the things that give meaning to our lives - and what to do about it. artsjournal.com/diacritical/…

I've been saying for years that our institutions are crumbling. As usual, @AJDoug is several steps ahead of me. Here's his trenchant analysis of why they're crumbling, in the information economy, and how we have a chance to rebuild them and get it right. artsjournal.com/diacritical/…

For Valentine's Day, here's my best birthday present ever: the five-minute string quartet Greg Sandow, my husband, wrote for me 25 years ago, just released in a wonderful recording by the Terra Quartet. (It's on Spotify too) #romantic music.apple.com/us/album/qua…

I'm hearing people say they will no longer subscribe to The Washington Post, but there are still great writers there doing great work - that's what your subscription is funding. Without The Post, we wouldn't have good stories like this one: wapo.st/4arCIML

After the second screening of "Dear Lara" at the @SBIFF, Lara St John reminds everyone that it's supposed to be about the music. Please, film distributors, take note: everyone needs to see this powerful movie. Ask the young violinist who choked out a tearful Thank You in the Q&A.

So many of the things we read the paper for, the small pleasures in the fabric of our day, suddenly gone. I can't see how it's a winning strategy for the ⁦@washingtonpost⁩ (which fired 300 people yesterday, including some of its best food writers) to make its readers so sad

🧵 1/ We’re devastated about the layoffs at The Washington Post, which are gutting D.C. reporting. These journalists are an incalculable loss for our city. The 51st’s mission has always felt urgent, but now we know it needs to kick into high gear.

In a remarkable act of self-immolation, @washingtonpost has eliminated sports & Book World, photographers, many foreign bureaus & Metro staff. Amid the carnage, the fact that it also axed most of its arts staff has not drawn much notice. My thoughts: annemidgette.com/blog/f/a-re…

Detail from inside the gutting of the Washington Post: 300 journalists or so will be fired this AM at 8:30 AM (right now…). They’ll be cut off from newsroom computer access at 9 AM. Word got out about this yesterday afternoon. Dozens of reporters & journalists worked late last night & early this AM to finish stories they had in process before being shut out. That’s who works at the Post. No surprise. <I interviewed these people — this is a good, valuable story. Let me just get it done…before I lose my job & worry about how to pay my rent.> One last story. — 30 —

If I were still at the Washington Post and waiting for a company-wide 8:30 am zoom today to "discuss changes," presumably the long-bruited layoffs, this note would be a glimmer of hope and kindness on a bleak day, so I am happy to amplify it.
As someone who has been laid off from mainstream media, I have a few thoughts: 1. This is not a judgment on you. This is about a contracting industry 2. The world of independent journalism has never been more vibrant and welcoming 3. If you are laid off and in the DC area, I will take you to coffee at a time of your choosing so we can talk about next steps. My email is cillizzac@gmail.com.

A heartbreaking random juxtaposition from my feed just now: a reporter doing her damndest to keep reporting while rumors buzz that her very job may be about to vanish. #washingtonpost
