15 June 1993. Motor racing champion James Hunt died (aged 45) in his sleep of a heart attack at his home in Wimbledon. He was the 1976 F1 World Champion. After retiring from motor racing, he became a BBC motor sport commentator. He’s still greatly missed.
10 June 1944. 642 men, women and children were murdered by the German Waffen SS in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, France. The village was never rebuilt and featured at the opening episode of the classic ITV documentary series World at War.

6 June 1944. The 24,970 American troops who landed on Omaha Beach were met with the fiercest resistance on all the 5 beaches, but they fought their way off the beach. The Omaha Beach landing featured in the films The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan.
6 June 1944. On Gold Beach, the British landed 24,970 troops. The high quality British commandos using tanks quickly moved off the beach and pushed inland.
6 June 1944. A total of 21,400 Canadian troops landed on Juno Beach. They met with stiff resistance, but as 30 per cent of the invaders were skilled marksmen they were able to fight their way off the beach, and then linked up with the British troops who had landed on Gold Beach.
6 June 1944. British soldiers wade ashore on Sword Beach. A total of 28,845 landed. The British brought 21 amphibious tanks ashore, and were then able to fight their way off the beach.

2 June 2008. Bo Diddley (Ellas McDaniel) died (aged 79). He was a key figure during the transition from blues to rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s. He influenced many artists, including: Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and The Animals.
