A little positivity for the turtle lovers 🐢
While walking the beach tonight, I spotted several people using red flashlights instead of bright white lights, and it was great to see.
Many visitors don’t realize that from May through October, sea turtles nest on our Gulf Coast beaches. When baby sea turtles hatch, they naturally head toward the glow of the moon and stars over the Gulf to find the water.
Bright white lights from phones, flashlights, and beachfront buildings can confuse them, causing them to head in the wrong direction. Red lights are much less disruptive, which is why they’re recommended during sea turtle nesting season.
It’s a simple change that can make a big difference for these amazing animals.
Thank you to everyone helping keep our beaches turtle friendly.
