Today 15th June 1961 East German leader Walter Ulbricht states “Nobody has any intention of building a wall."

A few weeks later, events in Berlin reveal his statement to be a lie. On 13 August 1961 the GDR starts building a wall that will divide East and West for 28 years.

Michael Baumann and Bert Greiser were captured by border guards while trying to escape East Berlin in April 1989. Both were born in East Germany in 1962 and had never known life without the wall. By the time they began planning their escape, border guards had killed 140 East Berliners at the wall, most recently just two months earlier. 1/4
