• I’ve said from the start, OKC will win in 6. You think they want to force a Game 7 instead of winning tonight? Hell no. They’re going to compete & give it all they have tonight in San Antonio to finish this series off for good. Be ready for a Thunder/Knicks finals 🥇
• We watched how well rounded OKC looked in Game 5 even with J-Dub/Ajay being OUT (Ajay OUT/J-Dub Questionable tonight once again) & McCain picked up his first ever playoff start & looked exceptional scoring 20 points on 33 minutes of action. Hartenstein continues to impress me with the way he’s completely flipped his role on limiting Wemby while also being a huge contribute on the offensive side as well.
• Both these teams play at the most physical defensive level possible & there’s no arguing that, one guy that took full advantage of that while drawing fouls in Game 5 was SGA who finished with 32 points with 16/32 coming from the FT line. He actually looked pretty poor to his standards but he started settling in doing what he does best = drawing fouls.
SGA: “I might’ve had the worst start to a basketball game in my career, but the group held it down.” = Major Bounce Back!
• All series long SGA has been getting pressed/doubled consistently every possession which has forced him to pass the ball & feed guys wide open looks. He’s averaged 9.8 assists on 18.5 potential this series.
• One thing that stands out the MOST to me when watching this series is when Chet gets going early, it genuinely gets in Wemby’s head. It wasn’t until last game where he finally got going & it’s exactly what OKC needs to win. He finished with 16 points & 11 rebounds on 30 minutes of action & looked confident in every shot he took.
Chet: “Yeah, I think it’s important to be aggressive, but have smart aggression. I definitely feel like there’s been looks I wasn’t able to take advantage of earlier in the series.”
Hart on Chet: “It’s big, anytime he comes out aggressive, finding his spots throughout the offense.”
• Now to Hartenstein, who I think has single handedly been the savior of this series, Game 1 Wemby dropped 41 points, 24 rebounds, 3 assists on 25 shots while Hartenstein played just 12 minutes with just 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist (Since that Game 1, Wemby has been held to just an average of 25 points, 8.8 rebounds on just 17 FGA). Limiting him to the best of his abilities, Hartenstein has also been huge averaging 9.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, & 3.5 assists since that Game 1. In Game 5, Hartenstein held Wemby to 1/9 shooting when matched up as well.
• With Chet/Hart on the floor it makes it even more difficult for the Spurs offensively than it already is with OKC’s VERY aggressive defense. One key piece to this entire series has been how deep OKC’s bench truthfully is…through the first 3 games OKC bench totaled 183 points vs Spurs 64 bench points, this included a MASSIVE Game 3 76-23 edge to the Thunder (franchise playoff record & one of the highest bench outputs in conference finals history). In Game 5, OKC had just a 40-33 bench points advantage.
• This Thunder defense held the Spurs offense to 12/41 from three (29%), don’t be surprised if they do the same thing once again.
OKC Thunder Role Players In Game 5:
- Caruso | 22 Points | 6 Assists
- McCain | 20 Points | 3 Rebounds
- Wallace | 7 Points | 5 Assists | 4 Rebounds ( 29 /- which was best on OKC)
We should continue to see strong minutes from both Caruso & McCain.
SGA to Caruso: “He has the most championships on this team he’s one of, if not the best competitor in the NBA.”
Chet to McCain: “He understands what his job is, he can put points on the board in a hurry.”
• ITS TIME FOR WAR,
#ThunderUp .
