Going on a maternity leave for at least next 3 months. My due date is approaching and honestly I don't know shit about kids ๐Ÿ˜… I haven't even seen a baby up close in real life, only in public spaces, in movies or in social media. So now would be a good time to try to find out what those strange creatures are before I get one.

Main areas of focus for me this right now, knowing I will have to step away for about 3 months: ๐ŸŽฏ Refining my workflow and processes. I have already organized a detailed full-cycle workflow, compiled a brief for a client and drafted a rough proposal and technical task template. Currently improving that proposal and TT, testing ways to organize everything to create a seamless interaction with a client. ๐ŸŽฏ Working on my first full-cycle concept case. My goal is to take an AI generated but realistic business and go through all the work stages to solve their problem. The brief is already filled out in detail, now the next stage is doing a comprehensive market research to craft an effective proposal, TT and then use this research data for the next steps. ๐ŸŽฏ Rebranding and repositioning myself. These changes will most likely be visible only after I get back from my maternity leave, but for now I am laying out the groundwork.

โžก๏ธ A major change is coming. Shifting my mindset and approach from purely technical to business and client-oriented. A choice to not work 9-5 for someone else means you have to pick up a myriad of other skills. You become a one-person company and how well this company performs - depends on you. You become not only a developer, but a project manager, a brand manager, a marketer, a designer, a salesperson, and an accountant at the very least. ๐Ÿ‘‰ This is why my approach has shifted from "give me a Figma mockup and tell me what to code" to "what do I need to learn to provide full-cycle website services to maximize value (and minimize headaches) for clients".

๐Ÿ”ง In October I also unlocked the full power of SASS. I was familiar with it, but now I can properly harness the power of mixins, functions and placeholders to speed up development. โœจ It does wonders for maintainability without sacrificing performance - unlike imports in pure CSS, SCSS gets compiled into one CSS file (which can also be minified if used with Vite). Also Sass lets you customize Bootstrap so that it doesn't look too "Bootstrapy" ๐Ÿ˜… #WebDevelopment #SASS #SCSS #Bootstrap #Freelancer #CodingJourney #LearningInPublic

๐Ÿ”ง In October, I learned how to optimize my development process and production code using build tools. โœจ Using Vite for my projects has been a game changer - it helps me automate cross-browser compatibility, performance optimization, code maintainability and more. #WebDevelopment #BuildTools #Webpack #Vite #Parcel #Esbuild #Freelancer #CodingJourney #LearningInPublic

๐Ÿ”ง During September I took an amazing JS refresher course from @traversymedia. It managed to surprise me even in the most basic topics which I thought I knew well. โœจIt was mostly a refresher with a new angle for me, but I also learned a lot of totally new stuff, such as unit testing, data structures and algorithms. It gave me an opportunity to dive deeper into topics I knew only superficially, like OOP and Webpack bundling. So I am definitely glad to have spent my September on this course. #WebDevelopment #CodingJourney #JavascriptDevelopers #javascriptcourse #Freelancer #LearningInPublic

So, I'm back. Hello, world, again. There has been a lot going on since mid April when I stopped posting here. Starting from the beginning - here is my GitHub activity from April 9th until June 25th. I decided to challenge myself to make a commit every day and I lasted 2,5 months. It was an interesting experience and I will tell you: - Why it did not eventually work out for me - Expectations vs. reality - Lessons I took away from this challenge - My current approach #CodingJourney #WebDevelopment #CodingChallenge

๐Ÿ“Lessons I took away from this challenge. Part 2. โœ… Consistency is key, but only if do not start sacrificing quality for quantity and appearances. Yes, making a small step every day is better than waiting for a perfect moment to do everything at once. But these small steps need to be meaningful, conscious and count for something. And a small step does not necessarily equal a green day on GitHub - building a freelance development business requires so much more than improving your code. I am shifting my mindset to start thinking like an entrepreneur, not a GitHub nerd. This includes understanding that clients do not pay for your fully green GitHub. They do not even pay for a pretty website or your expert knowledge of HTML and CSS. They pay for tangible results they get - increased conversions and more profit. Your coding skills is just a tool you use to help them achieve that. So instead of focusing only on making commits, I ask myself every day - what can I do today to learn how to provide maximum value to clients and how can I present it best?

โœ”๏ธ My current approach ๐ŸŽฏ Right now I do not code just to code. I code when there is something to code. If that makes sense ๐Ÿ˜… This is why my GitHub activity can be effortlessly green for a week or so and then I skip a few days. When I code, I do it with a purpose, I focus on a project and consciously contribute to it. When I don't - it means I am doing something else for my business. As I said, becoming a freelancer means becoming an entrepreneur, not just a coding nerd. It entails doing a lot of other shit to make things work. Currently, I am doing a lot of market research and setting up my processes. I have learned so much during these months and soon I will have everything up and running. With the exception of a brief maternity leave, of course.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key takeaways about CSS Animations (and animations in general): ๐Ÿ’ก Animations are a powerful tool, but one to be used with care and purpose. They should not be confusing, distracting and dizzying users, but rather directing their attention and enhancing user experience. It is best to avoid using animations for purely visual and decorative purposes. Ask yourself, what problem do you need this animation to solve? ๐Ÿ”ธGive visual feedback (form submission / page change / loader / progress bar / error message / alert /etc.) Highlight important info (new feature / call-to-action button / update info / etc.) ๐Ÿ”ธIntroduce new elements to a page (modal window / notification / mobile menu / drop down menu / etc.) ๐Ÿ”ธShow functional change (theme toggle / open-close icon / mute-volume button / etc.) #Animations #CSS #UXDesign #CodingJourney #DEVCommunity

I am finishing my CSS Animations learning journey, and here are some of the useful resources I've found, apart from the Scrimba course: 1โƒฃ CSS Animations Series - youtube.com/watch?v=f1WMjDx4โ€ฆ. It includes two explanatory videos, one on transitions and another one on animations and keyframes, and several practical videos showing different common use cases. 2โƒฃ Lessons in article form from The Odin Project - theodinproject.com/lessons/nโ€ฆ. They also have amazing lessons on many other topics. #CSSAnimation #DEVCommunity #CodingJourney

Tonight I had a nightmare๐Ÿ’ค I was dreaming about being brought in on a project, which I thought was using React and that was why they invited me (I know React quite well). But - plot twist - it was built in Angular. And I had no way back. Thankfully, my reaction was "okay, I have a great course on Angular, I'll learn on the way" ๐Ÿ˜… This dream returned me to the question I've been asking myself for a while - is it worth learning Vue or Angular as a React developer? Is it best to niche down to avoid becoming a jack of all trades? Or is it better to al least familiarize myself with other frameworks to get a broader understanding? After all, programming isn't about being an expert in a specific tool, but rather about knowing how to choose the best fitting tool to solve a particular problem. What is your opinion on that? #WebDevelopment #javascript #reactjs #vuejs #angular

Yesterday I made a screen-less day for myself. The weather was amazing, so it was a perfect opportunity to recharge my eyes, mind and body. I took my dog for a long walk in a park, spent time with family and started reading The Hobbit - I am 3 chapters in already. I tend to push myself, forgetting to designate days for recharging, until I find myself totally burnt out. As a result, it negatively impacts my long-term productivity. Today continuing my CSS Animations journey with fresh mind.

On a purely personal note - Iโ€™ve just finished this lembas bread for the soul ๐Ÿ’” Iโ€™ve been stalling this moment as much as I could, but it had to end at some point. Good news is - I can now proceed to starting my journey to Erebor. Yes, Iโ€™m that crazy person that started their Tolkien exploration with the Silmarillion, before reading the Hobbit and the LOTR. But now I canโ€™t remember my life without it. The greatest literary universe of all time โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ #Tolkien #TheSilmarillion #LOTR
